MindPlus Observes World Schizophrenia Day with Awareness Session at Chandigarh Press Club
Chandigarh, May 24, 2025 — As part of ongoing World Mental Health Awareness Month, MindPlus, a NABH-accredited rehabilitation centre and a regional pioneer in holistic mental health care organized an impactful awareness session today at the Chandigarh Press Club to mark World Schizophrenia Day.
Schizophrenia, a chronic brain disorder which continues to be one of the most misunderstood and stigmatized mental health conditions. Affecting nearly 1% of India’s population (approximately 80 lakh individuals), the condition severely impacts thinking, perception, emotional responsiveness and social interaction. Unfortunately, over 75% of affected individuals in India do not receive adequate treatment due to systemic challenges including stigma, lack of resources and limited mental health services.
Experts emphasized the growing need for mental fitness in daily life. “Everyday life can be tough at times. That’s why keeping your mind fit is just as important as keeping your body fit, Improving mental fitness can significantly reduce stress, depression, anger and more.” said Dr. Ankush Bhatia, psychiatrist.
During the session, he highlighted the alarming trend of rising mental health disorders in India, where 10.6% of adults are reported to suffer from some form of mental illness. In light of these figures, the role of early intervention, community support and structured rehabilitation becomes more crucial than ever.
MindPlus showcased its comprehensive six-stage rehabilitation program for schizophrenia, which includes Assessment, Stabilization, Skill Building, Family Intervention, Community Testing and Pre-/Post-Discharge Care. This approach targets not just acute symptoms like hallucinations and delusions, but also negative and cognitive impairments—helping individuals reintegrate into society and lead meaningful lives.
Present on the occasion, another psychiatrist Dr Lakshmi Shodhana elaborated on the latest understanding of schizophrenia’s root causes, which include neurodevelopmental disturbances and imbalances in neurotransmitters such as dopamine and glutamate. Symptoms range from hallucinations and delusions to social withdrawal, impaired cognition and emotional blunting.
By hosting such awareness sessions across the region throughout the month, MindPlus aims to bridge the existing treatment gap and challenge prevailing misconceptions. “Schizophrenia is not a life sentence. With the right support, individuals can recover and thrive.” said Rajiv Thapar, Vice President, Mindplus.
Some patients also shared heartfelt testimonials which reflected their personal journeys of recovery.
MindPlus calls on communities, media and policymakers to join hands in dismantling stigma and advocating for inclusive mental health care across India.
