Max Super Speciality Hospital Mohali Raises Awareness on World Kidney Day

Mohali: On the occasion of World Kidney Day, Dr. Munish Chauhan, Associate Director, Nephrology and Kidney Transplant, Max Hospital, Mohali, shares valuable insights on raising awareness about kidney health. This initiative reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to improving public health and addressing the growing burden of kidney disease.
Speaking on the significance of World Kidney Day, Dr. Munish Chauhan, Associate Director, Nephrology and Kidney Transplant, Max Hospital, Mohali highlighted the rise in kidney failure and said, “Kidney failure is the sixth fastest-growing cause of death in India. Several factors, including high blood pressure, diabetes, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), untreated kidney stones, and urinary tract infections (UTIs), contribute significantly to kidney failure. Unfortunately, symptoms often go unnoticed until the condition worsens. However, certain warning signs should not be ignored, such as swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet, changes in urine colour, persistent fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, nausea, and loss of appetite. Recognizing these symptoms early is crucial in preventing complications.”
Dr. Chauhan emphasized that diabetes and obesity are major risk factors for kidney disease, making it essential for individuals with diabetes to undergo regular blood sugar tests and manage their weight effectively. Keeping blood pressure in check and staying well-hydrated also play a vital role in kidney health.
Speaking upon preventive measures, Dr. Chauhan said, “By making conscious lifestyle changes, individuals can maintain kidney function and prevent or slow the progression of kidney disease. Managing blood sugar levels and blood pressure, staying hydrated, following a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and undergoing routine kidney function tests are crucial steps toward overall kidney health.”
Taking small yet consistent steps to protect kidney health is vital for overall well-being. Early detection and preventive care are key—regular check-ups can make a significant difference in maintaining optimal kidney function and preventing long-term complications.
