Man gets new lease of life after life-saving leadless pacemaker implantation

Bhatinda, November 29: A 52-year-old man with a severe complication from a previous implanted pacemaker causing serious infection got a new lease of life after doctors at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Bathinda led by Dr. Ishtiyaq Masood, Interventional Cardiologist successfully implanted a leadless pacemaker (Micra).
The patient had arrived at Max in a critical condition with infection spreading through his bloodstream thus making his situation life-threatening.
Dr. Masood and his team acted swiftly, stabilizing the patient before performing an implantation of a leadless pacemaker, a cutting-edge procedure. This advanced device eliminates the need for chest incisions and lead wires connected to the heart.
This is one of the rare procedures performed in India, with very few cases reported nationwide, informed Dr. Ishtiyaq Masood.
He said ,” The patient was brought with frank pus in the right-sided pacemaker pocket, ECG changes, and an ECHO LVF of 40–45%. Our team acted swiftly, performing a right-sided lead extraction and placing the patient on a temporary pacemaker for support. The following day, we successfully implanted the leadless pacemaker without any incisions or stitches. The patient responded remarkably well to the procedure and was discharged just one day after surgery. He is now recovering without complications and is ready to resume his daily activities.”
Meanwhile Micra is the world’s smallest pacemaker. Unlike traditional pacemakers, which are placed in the chest with leads going to the heart, Micra is directly implanted into the heart. There are no chest incisions, scars, or bumps under the skin. The patient doesn’t even feel that there is anything implanted in their body. The ppatients with a Micra leadless pacemaker can resume their routine activities quickly. The procedure is safe, tested, and approved for use with MRI scanners. There are no concerns with airport security, and patients can use mobile phones and household appliances without issues. Additionally, the estimated battery life is longer, lasting up to 15–17 years, depending on several factors.
