
Chandigarh, November 25, 2024: The fourth Chandigarh Eye Film Festival CME was held at Hotel Shivalik View, Sector 17, organized by the Chandigarh Ophthalmological Society and City Eye Bank in collaboration with Dr. Ashok Sharma’s Cornea Centre. The event brought together around 100 leading eye specialists from Chandigarh UT, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
The conference was inaugurated by Padma Shri Prof. Amod Gupta, Former Dean & Head, Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER, with Padma Shri Prof. Jagat Ram, Former Director & HOD, Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER as Guest of Honour.
The highlight of the event was an inspiring session titled “Heart to Heart with The Legend Padma Shri Prof. Amod Gupta,” interviewed by his student, renowned Bengaluru-based ophthalmologist Dr. K. S. Kumar. Prof. Gupta shared valuable insights on professional excellence and personal growth, encouraging young ophthalmologists to adopt discipline, punctuality, honesty and a positive attitude. He emphasized hard work over shortcuts, specialization in sub-specialties, and collaboration through group practice.
The scientific program featured presentations by eminent experts including Dr. S. K. Sharma, Dr. Sandeep Mahajan, Dr. Kapil Vohra, Prof. Ram Lal, Dr. Mohit Dogra, Dr. Shakeen Singh, Dr. Sudhir Salhotra, Dr. Beli Ram, Dr. Rakesh Bansal, Dr. Rohit Sharma and Dr. Pawan Prasher. Sessions included free papers, challenging cases, and competitive two-minute video presentations.
Dr. Ashok Sharma, Chief Organizing Secretary and Director, Cornea Centre, presented his pioneering work in corneal grafting in infants and children, including the use of Femtosecond laser technology enabling faster visual recovery and stable outcomes. With more than 250 successful pediatric corneal transplants, Dr. Sharma holds the highest record in the region and has received multiple national and international awards. His centre is renowned for advanced corneal treatments.
Dr. Rajan Sharma, Member Punjab Ophthalmological Society, Haryana Ophthalmological Society and Chandigarh Ophthalmological Society presented his research on the use of glycerine preserved grafts and highlighted that these can be used during the shortage of donor cornea as it occurred during COVID in 2019. Dr. Rajan Sharma is carrying on a number of research projects on cell cultures, limbal stem cell and mesenchymal stem cell cultures.
The conference was moderated by Dr K S Kumar a well – known retinal surgeon from Bangalore, Karnataka. The conference was also live-streamed to benefit eye surgeons in remote areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
